Introduction

Today, I want to share my thoughts on electric vehicles (EVs). As a self-proclaimed technology geek, I've always been fascinated by innovative gadgets. From old computers to tinkering with typewriters, I've had a passion for understanding how things work. So when Tesla introduced their electric vehicles, my excitement knew no bounds. But as a busy surgeon and a concerned consumer, I've come to realize that there are some challenges and considerations that come with owning an EV. Let's dive into the world of EVs, shall we?

The Allure of Electric Vehicles:

I've always been a fan of cool cars with cutting-edge technology, and Tesla's vehicles fit the bill perfectly. However, for a long time, I made excuses, believing that I wasn't successful enough to own one. But then the pandemic hit, and it made me realize that life is too short for excuses. So, I took the plunge and got myself a Tesla Model Y, a more practical choice with kids and their penchant for goldfish snacks.

Initial Excitement Meets Reality:

After the initial excitement of driving my new EV, I encountered some unexpected issues. For instance, the interior insulation came off easily when my son accidentally pulled on it. Additionally, I discovered that the sun visor didn't extend far enough to block the sun effectively. These minor inconveniences made me question the build quality and attention to detail in some areas.

Range Anxiety and Charging Woes:

One of the significant challenges with EVs is range anxiety, a genuine concern for many owners. Initially, I was apprehensive about running out of battery power, but over time, I learned to gauge the limits and push the boundaries. However, I faced a harrowing experience when my charging cord melted due to high resistance. Finding a nearby charger with similar capabilities only added to my frustration and diminished range.

Charging Infrastructure and Supercharger Dilemmas:

Charging infrastructure remains a significant obstacle for widespread EV adoption. Superchargers, although convenient, are often located in less secure areas, which can be anxiety-provoking for some. Moreover, the limited number of charging stalls and the time it takes for a full charge can be quite inconvenient, especially during peak hours. Increasing the number of eligible vehicles while maintaining efficient charging is a complex challenge in our current society.

Tesla's Build Quality and Service Issues:

Beyond charging concerns, I found the build quality of Tesla vehicles to be a topic of discussion among owners. While some appreciate the minimalistic design, others, including myself, yearn for better attention to detail. Comparing Tesla to other electric models like the Mercedes EQs or Cadillac Lyriq highlights the need for improvement. Moreover, service experiences have been less than satisfactory, with limited options for repair or replacement.

Future Considerations and Concluding Thoughts:

Although I appreciate the benefits of EVs, such as never visiting a gas station again, the current state of charging infrastructure and build quality concerns have made me reconsider future EV purchases. Until charging infrastructure becomes more widespread and accessible, and Tesla improves its build quality and service, I believe waiting might be the wisest choice. When I eventually replace my Tesla, I'll likely opt for a hybrid that offers the convenience of electric driving around town while still having the backup of a gasoline engine.

Final Thoughts: In conclusion, my journey with EVs has been a mix of excitement and disappointment. While EVs represent the future of transportation, certain challenges, including range anxiety, limited charging infrastructure, and concerns about build quality and service, need to be addressed. As an EV enthusiast, I remain hopeful that these issues will be overcome in due time, leading to a wide adoption and better support infrastructure.
