You read that right. The famed movie prop turned fan-favorite watch is now even more wearable.

Hamilton, a watch brand often synonymous with Hollywood, has taken one of its on-screen icons and brought it down to size – 38mm, to be exact. The "Murph," a cult favorite watch among cinephiles and horologists alike, has now been made more wearable and brought in line with the core Khaki Field Automatic line.

The Murph was designed and created especially for Interstellar in 2014. We have covered that story here on Hodinkee, speaking to prop master Ritchie Kremer , who helped design the original watch. At the time of the film's release, it was not a production model but a prop watch – and it remained out of production for five years.

Calls for a production Murph reached a fever pitch and eventually led to Hamilton satiating the hobbyists. The 42mm Murph watch came out in 2019. Design-wise, it was pitch-perfect and even included a nod to the film via lumed Morse code on the second hand representing a key plot point. Early iterations of the watch came in a special edition commemorative box designed to mirror a multi-dimensional tesseract (another callback to Interstellar ).

Fans were over the moon – and in another galaxy – over this release. But you can't please 'em all. And soon after, complaints began that 42mm was just too large. If only it were 38mm!! Hamilton released a teaser campaign video on Instagram last week with a voiceover reading what appears to be a fan letter expressing that exact sentiment.

And so, much like it did with the release of the 42mm Murph, Hamilton listened and delivered. Today, it releases the Murph watch in 38mm with the same design as the original, just smaller.

The lug width shrinks from 22mm down to 20mm, which should make the strap lovers out there happy. Next, the lug-to-lug sees a major downsizing from approximately 52mm to 44.7mm. Lastly, this new 38mm model does not feature the Morse code markings on the seconds hand.

It does, however, feature the same H-10 automatic movement with 80 hours of power reserve which can be seen through an exhibition caseback. It will come in at $100 less than its larger counterpart, at $895.

As Hodinkee's resident watcher of movies , I may be biased as I have covered Interstellar more than once here on the site. I own the other Hamilton watch from the film and have an affinity for the Murph. I recently got a chance to see the original Murph prop watch up close and interact with the move-magic mechanism that allowed the seconds hand to initiate Morse code on screen. It was a fully practical effect activated by wires and switches hidden from view (much like the watches in Tenet ). This is all to say that I admire the Murph as a product of movie-making – a watch designed specifically for a film and then made real years later.

The actual Murph prop watch, complete with the cables and rig attached and hidden beneath the wooden board.

I always loved the fact that its manifestation was the product of fervent fan demand. And so, when I saw that this new 38mm came from a similar place, I couldn't help but give Hamilton nice polite applause for keeping its ears to the enthusiast community.

Needless to say, I am excited about this watch. The 38mm Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic is one of the most popular "entry-level" watches out there, and pairing a cult favorite with a popular size seems like a no-brainer to me. I love that nothing was compromised here to make this size change a reality. This is the Murph, just smaller.

And I'll have to join the masses in saying that 42mm with a 52mm lug-to-lug was asking a lot of the average-wristed. That's a lot of lug overhang, which is something we honestly don't talk about enough.

By losing the Morse code markings on the seconds hand, the watch is brought more visually in line with the actual Murph prop watch from the film.

I won't go too in-depth on my thoughts here because I haven't seen the watch in the metal yet. The good news is that one is on its way for a Hands-On review soon. Let me know if there's anything specific you want answered about this watch. I'll do my best to address it.

But in the meantime, I consider this to be a win for the watch community. Keep talking, keep voicing your opinions. You never know who's listening.
